Lincolnbidz Under DDOS Attack

Posted on 01 December 2009 by admin

First HungryHammer and now Lincolnbidz is under DDOS Attack. They have posted a message on their homepage saying

“Oops!! Somebody broke Linky! We are looking into ANOTHER DDoS ATTACK!!!!!”

It is strange as normally famous websites are targeted by BAD Guys for DDOS attack shuch as Twitter . Lincolnbidz is still using BETA version. Its hard to digest that someone will waste his/her resources and time to attack a website which is still a baby and learning how to walk.

What do you think about it? Share your thoughts .

HungryHammer Victim of DDoS Attack

Posted on 30 November 2009 by admin

A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users.

check out this video explaining what is DDOS

We have received an email from HungryHammer regarding the latest situation on their website which was the victim of a malicious DDoS attack recently. Contents of the email are as follows:

Hi,

Cool new site!!

Just to let you know as we always do with PAW that HungryHammer.com has AGAIN been subjected to a DDOS attack this time taking down all it’s servers!

The DDOS originated from Cupertino, CA which if you do your research is the location of a very well known Penny Auction website!

Coincidence? Not sure yet.

We’re working on getting it back up and running but it means that we have had to completely shut down the site and take the server offline as the DDOS attacks just kept coming. You’ll just get a blank white page at the moment whist we fix it.

Unbelievable that it’s not the people out there that are nasty but in fact it seems to me that competitors play dodgy tricks and think they can get away with it.

We’re working with other sites and the FBI at present over the DDOS attacks and hope to be able to get back up and running ASAP.

Thanks

Lets hope that HungryHammer find the culprits for this nasty piece of work and are up and running again soon.

This incident has only highlighted the need for website owners to implement robust security to protect their websites from would be predators. We would welcome any thoughts from members, whether you have been victims yourself of such attacks, suggestions on what security measures can be implemented or indeed anything on the subject of DDoS attacks.

BidYell.com Review

Posted on 27 November 2009 by admin

One of the latest penny auction websites to hit the United Kingdom is Bidyell.com

Some of the graphics used on the site are okay which probably stems from the fact that BidYell is part of T-Enterprise a Scottish Games Design & Development Company although I must say considering their forte in hindsight I am probably a little disappointed in the appearance of the website or maybe it’s just another one of those off-the-shelf penny auction websites from our friends at Sonik Technologies that we featured recently.

Regardless of appearance the website itself is very easy to navigate around and seems to have a few innovative ideas like the ‘Knockout Auction’ which seems like a great idea although I personally being a lightweight boxer would not want to find myself up against a Super Heavyweight with his massive arsenal of bids if you get my drift.

The website is relatively new so it is hard to gauge feedback although BidYell does have a forum which attracts transparency and gets the big thumbs up from us. There were a few negative comments in the forum about shipping times but hey I am sure that will be sorted in due course.

On to the technical aspects of the website. I discovered that the website is quite slow and counters are not smooth enough. There is a very good reason for this in that every second the website sends a request of about 20 – 30 KB to its server which updates the clock counter and other stuff on website. The size of request is way too big if you compare it with other websites like Swoopo (1KB), Madbid(1-2 KB), Redbread (1-2 KB). so you could say that this websites bandwidth requirements are 15 – 30 times greater compared to other websites. This website sends data of about 2-3 MB per minute which is HUGE

Has anyone tried this website in FireFox? I tried it on 2-3 different computers and sometimes the website did strange things in Firefox. If anyone else has experienced problems in Firefox we would love to hear from you. The website also has a few JavaScript errors which can affect bidding. Please check the screenshot below.

GoCrazyBid.com Legit or Not

Posted on 24 November 2009 by admin

Continuing on from my last post regarding penny auction website software ….

I decided to continue my research to try and ascertain what organizations are using the software provided by Sonik Technologies (as featured in my last post). The first website we are going to feature in this series is GoCrazyBid.com.

If you check WHOIS data and search for gocrazybid you will find, by huge coincidence, that the registration service is provided by Sonik Technologies PVT. Contact: +91.9928988554” . This is the very same Indian company that we featured yesterday who sell software containing dummy bidders.

You may recall that from the chatroom transcriptions they stated that all of their penny auction software has Dummy Bidders(Robots). I think there is justification is stating that GoCrazyBid also have this Dummy Bidder option within their admin panel.

Whether GoCrazyBid use this function or not is difficult to prove we but we know for definite that they have the Dummy Bidder option contained within their software. So bidders beware, it may not be just Jon from Houston or Steve from London that you are bidding against but also Rob Ot from Sonik Technologies too. Do take a minute to check the following screenshots….

Biddango.com Review

Posted on 20 November 2009 by admin

Biddango.com is a new penny auction website with a nice and clean design (still needs Browser compatibility).

biddango review

biddango review

This website is hosted on Dedicated server. I wonder why they hide their identity using proxy server while registering their domain name.
This website is new and does not offer much variety of auctions. they have 4-5 live auctions but I expect more in the near future. They do not have SSL implemented on their website like Swoopo, redbread and madbid. But in their Privacy Policy, they have mentioned that :

“We offer the use of a secure server. All supplied sensitive/credit information is transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and then encrypted into our Payment gateway providers database only to be accessible by those authorized with special access rights to such systems, and are required tokeep the information confidential.”

I do not see SSL Implemented on Login or Register Page. Not even on Change Password Page.

Once you are registered with them, you can not change your account detail. they are doing this to stop abuses. BUT there should be option to change delivery address. I didn’t see that option when I logged in as member.

You can see your remaining bids at top of the page which is nice.
Overall website looks nice and worth trying. and I hope in near future they will take care of above mentioned issues. Cheers..

BidMyDreams.com Review

Posted on 20 November 2009 by admin

Registered by
BidMyDreams
Cerritos
Cerritos, California 90703
United States

This website is hosted on Shared hosting on GoDaddy.com.
Shared hosting for a penny auction website is not good idea as there are 5030 more websites hosted on same server.

I have checked code of BidMyDreams.com and Guess what .. It is using same script as SellMoo.com just with different look and feel.
They have same problems as i mentioned in my last post.

BidMyDreams review

BidMyDreams review

Here are problems with website..
1. They do not have SSL implemented on website, which they should.
2. Just like SellMoo, they have information visible in server response. so your personal information like email, phone number, username can be viewed and misused.
3. Website is hosted on Shared Hosting which is not a good idea for Penny Auction Website.
4. Not Secure to use.

I hope their developers Could fix these issues ASAP.

Sellmoo.com Review

Posted on 19 November 2009 by admin

Sellmoo.com is a penny auction website born Mid 2009. This website has a nice and clean look which could be better but hey who cares as long as you are winning..

This domain is registered by
Kolb Internet Holdings LLC
PO Box 110223
bradenton, Florida 34211
United States

And is hosted on dedicated server.

I Checked its Source code and its server responses so that I can write technical review about this website.

I have checked their Privacy Policy and according to them

Security Procedures

We have adopted state-of-the-art Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology that encrypts all information you logged in before it is sent to us. Moreover, all the customer data we collect is protected against unauthorized access. To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure correct use of information, we employ best available Internet security methods and technologies. Please note, Sellmoo will never ask for your password or other personal information in e-mails that you receive unexpectedly or that you did not request.

BUT I do not see SSL implemented on that website. to check SSL, the URL must start with “HTTPS:// ” not with “HTTP://”. even on login page and on my account page, I do not see any SSL.

They also mentioned in Privacy Policy that User’s personal information like email address is not visible to public. BUT I doubt that. If you bid on that website, your email address is visible to someone with a little knowledge of programming. So spam bots can get your email address and can use it for spamming. People will be selling VIAGRA to you lol.

Here is the proof of what I am saying.sellmoo

Other issues are :
Their server response time is also too high which is because of unwanted data in their JSON response.
website is naked when you see their response from server. every detail is visible.
They do not show how many bids I have in my account on homepage. I have to go to my account page to see that.
Website is not SEO friendly.
Layout is not browser compatible.

They have to talk to their developer to fix all these issues so that users could feel safe when they are bidding on that website.

Is BidPax a scam?

Posted on 18 November 2009 by admin

I googled for “BidPax” and found this very interesting blog.
Why would someone create a new domain just for BidPax Scams as BidPax is a new website (domain created on OCT 2009) and isn’t very famous yet. Doesn’t make sense to me.
Here is copy of that blog :

I’ve used BidPax a fair bit and won a fair bit of stuff. Over the whole time I definately saved money, probably $1200 all together.

I have read numerous forum posts where people who have been bidding on BidPax mindlessly, write that they have been scammed. Of course they have been scammed, but not by BidPax, they have been conned by their own stupidity.

You can’t beat BidPax out of cash, but it’s pretty easy to take advantage of the mistakes of the other users on the site. There are a few basic do’s and don’ts which will get you out of trouble and into the winners circle.

DON’T-

*Bid when there are 3 or more AutoBidders bidding. When there are 2 it’s a bit trickier, you’ll have to bid unless you are happy for the item to go. As soon as one Autobidder runs out the auction ends so you’ll have to snipe with 2 running. But 3 or more? You would have to be pretty unlucky for 2 AutoBidders to run out at exactly the same time.

*Hold off till the price gets high. I never understood this one. Things go for cheap all the time. It just depends on how much action there is, not how far gone the auction is. It’s all about what other users are doing. If the price is high but 5 people are already committed you are going to be in for a battle. You’ll waste same amount of bids probably and drive the price even higher.

*Put an AutoBidder on and go for a walk/sleep/see a movie. Unless your AutoBidder is pretty big this usually is a good way of wasting bids. Monitoring what how other users are behaving is pivotal to success. Put your AutoBidder on, monitor the auction frequently, ready to pull out when there is too much action or reload your AutoBidder when it runs out of ammo.

*Expect that other single bidders are going to bid. So many times I’ve seen my AutoBidder get smashed by 4 or more single bidders at once and then the next time the my bid is in front I win. Why? Cause everyone is expecting someone else to take the hit. Its their fault for single bidding anyway but still, if u r single bidding then don’t expect anyone else to do the work for you.

So many times I have seen that 3 or more people are placing their bid simultaneously on the last second. The next time the timer clocks down to zero all the people thinks its time to save their bid. No one bids and the auction is over. Imagine having AutoBidder on this auction…That is also a reason why it would be clever to place your bid in this situation (when multiple bids were placed on last second of the auction last time) hoping that everybody expects other to place their bid this time. Who would be laughing then?

DO-

*Use AutoBidders more often than not. About 85% of auctions are won by AutoBidders. If everyone else is single bidding and there aren’t a lot of them its time to put your AutoBidder on. If your AutoBidder is on as well as 3 or more others then there’s no point keeping yours on this is when u take it off

*Have enough credit available. Under committing to items is a guaranteed loser move.

*Commit to an Auction not a product. That’s probably the biggest mistake you can make. So many times I’ve seen the same user bid on the items and quit on it and trying other day on same item. If you’re going to bid on something, do it once. It will save you in the long run. It’s a waste of time to chuck 20 bids on the same item 5 times. Just ammo up, and hit it hard once. You’ll get the item at least instead of just discounting it for someone else. Even if you end up spending a lot on bids you will at least get the product. Also concentrating on one particular auction will help you stay focused and when you are constantly observing the auction and others bidding behavior you will have much better chance to win than trying your luck on 5 different auctions for the same item.

One other related issue is the ebb and flow of the site. Basically items can go for almost nothing or a fair bit. If you watch it is so often that items do the opposite from each time. Let me explain,

If the playstation3 went for over 200 bucks last time, it will probably not reach 100 the next time. Reason being, that everyone is holding off. Then the time after, it will go for over 200 again. This is all because people are using the history of the items to judge when to start bidding. There is no real formbook, but ebb and flow seems to be more consistent than not.

So essentially, if you are patient and committed, this style of auction will work for you. I recommend AutoBidders because they are statistically the way you win. You won’t ever be able to beat BidPax consistently, but you can always beat the other users and capitalize on their mistakes.
